The 2026 summer Koshien is over, and Chiben Wakayama are champions, beating Kendai Takasaki 4-3 in a final that did something wonderful: it flipped its own script. The whole tournament had set this up as power vs pitching — Chiben’s fearsome bats against Kendai’s suffocating defense. In the end, the power team won on a bunt, and the pitching team’s lead came from a home run. Baseball, as ever, refuses to read the preview.

How it was won

Chiben struck first, pushing across two runs in the 2nd on a burst of extra-base hits and an RBI double. Kendai — true to their whole tournament, in which they won three separate 1-0 games — clawed one back in the 5th to make it 2-1, and hung around exactly the way they’d hung around all August.

Then came the 8th, and two swings of the game in the space of one inning.

Top of the 8th: Kendai’s captain, Yusei Ishida, launched a go-ahead two-run home run to right, flipping it 3-2. For a moment, the pitching-and-power team from Gunma was three outs from a historic first national title.

Bottom of the 8th: Chiben answered instantly — and, fittingly, with small ball. With runners in scoring position, they laid down a squeeze bunt to tie the game 3-3, and then the go-ahead run came home on a wild throw. All of it happened as the Chiben Wakayama stands blasted “Jock Rock,” the school’s legendary rally song — the tune Japanese fans half-jokingly call a cursed melody because Chiben so often scores the moment it starts. It started. They scored. 4-3.

Kendai went quietly in the 9th, and Chiben Wakayama were champions.

What it means

  • For Chiben Wakayama, it’s their fourth summer title (after 1997, 2000, and 2021) and their first in five years — a haul that ties the legendary PL Gakuen and places them among the most successful summer programs ever. They reached the top of a field of 3,363 schools, blitzing their way through the late rounds, including a 7-1 dismantling of favorite Yokohama in the semifinal.
  • For Kendai Takasaki, it’s heartbreak: the Gunma school reached its first-ever final and came within an inning of a first national title, undone by the one thing that could beat their pitching — a perfectly placed bunt.

The bigger picture

That’s a wrap on Koshien 2026 — and if you followed along here, you saw the whole arc: the first-timers and the dynasties, the giant-killings, the human stories behind the schools, and the passing of a coaching giant on the eve of his old school’s run. Chiben Wakayama end it as champions, but the thing worth remembering is the one the final proved again: at Koshien, the script is only ever a suggestion.
